The islands are best known for being home to the descendants of the Bounty mutineers and the Tahitians who accompanied them, an event that is described in several books and movies. This story still reflected in the surname of several of the inhabitants. With around fifty inhabitants (from nine families) Pitcairn also known as the least populous country in the world (although it is not an independent country).
